COVID AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN MALAWI

UNDP Malawi: COVID-19 Response Campaign Challenge
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Malawi faced a surge of misinformation and superstition, creating barriers to public health efforts. UNDP Malawi needed an effective communication campaign to counter these issues and promote lifesaving practices.

Our Approach
We developed a multi-platform response to reach diverse communities in Malawi. Key components included:

Public Messaging Materials
A series of visually engaging posters displayed in public spaces like bus stops, banks, clinics, and schools.

The messaging covered essential topics such as hand washing with soap, social distancing, recognizing COVID-19 symptoms, cleaning surfaces, and caring for those affected by COVID-19.

Music and Animation
We partnered with renowned Malawian artist Faith Mussa to create a song in Tumbuka, Chichewa, and English, sharing vital health tips for the COVID-19 response.

Radio plays a critical role in public communication in Malawi due to the remoteness of many communities. The song was considered essential for effectively reaching these areas with important public health information.

Additionally, we produced a vibrant animation featuring Malawi-styled characters, demonstrating safe practices. The animation also includes the Health Department's free-call helpline for COVID-19 support.

Social Media Campaign
We created engaging animations and social media posts delivering practical, bite-sized tips to help individuals stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Interactive Mobile Quiz
Designed a mobile app quiz featuring Malawi 3D characters, testing users' knowledge with multiple-choice questions. Successful players earned a Certificate of Completion, recognizing them as "COVID-19 Information Ambassadors".

Impact
The campaign was a resounding success. UNDP Malawi received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with radio stations reporting high engagement and enthusiastic responses from listeners. UNDP’s social media channels also saw significant interaction, highlighting the campaign's wide reach and effectiveness in promoting COVID-19 awareness.
